As of last month, a new BRANCH for Mac and Windows desktop was released, simply named Plex (not Plex Media Player).

The version numbering for Plex Mac and Windows starts over at 1.x.

Plex MEDIA PLAYER for Mac and Windows continues on version numbering 2.4.x up to whatever the last version is that is released in JAn 2020.

Plex gives an explanation for all of this on their blog site, the main point that people are complaining about is Plex is moving away from the HTPC (Home Theater PC) model to a model where every receiving device is a streaming device, i.e.

IP, as opposed to a direct play device.

Fortunately, OpenPHT works very well with Plex Meda Server, but it is a shame that for the original purpose of the application, to watch movies and TV shows on your Mac, the user experience is significantly worse than it was 5 years ago if you stick with the official Mac client.
